And Why That’s a Good Thing for You

Why I’m Not a Studio Photographer

Hey there!

I’m the kind of photographer who believes the best lighting setup is 93 million miles away and completely free. Yep, I’m talking about the sun. And no, you won’t find me in a studio with paper backdrops and props your toddler can (and will) knock over in two seconds flat.

My business card literally says “Not a Studio Photographer”, and it’s not just a quirky tagline — it’s the core of how I work and why I believe outdoor photography is the secret sauce to capturing authentic, beautiful, and actually fun portraits.

Let me break it down for you:

Nature is the Original Comfort Zone

You know that feeling when you take a deep breath in a forest or sit under a tree at the park and suddenly your brain is like, “Ahhh, yes. This. This is peace”? That’s not just poetic nonsense. Humans are hardwired to chill out in nature. Even if you're not the "I hike for fun" type, your nervous system still gets the memo.

So when we're outdoors, something magical happens: you loosen up. You’re not overthinking, you're just being. And that’s when the good stuff shows up on camera.

Natural Light is Basically a Soft-Glow Filter from Heaven

Studio lighting is cool if you’re going for “magazine cover” vibes — but natural light? When you know how to work with it, it’s unbeatable. It wraps around you like a compliment. It adds depth, warmth, and glow without making you look like you’ve been through six rounds of Photoshop.

Whether it’s the golden hour turning your hair into spun gold or an overcast sky giving everything that creamy, cinematic tone — nature’s lighting setup is diverse and honestly kind of showing off. But I’m here for it.

You’re the Main Character

Not the Couch or the Fake Christmas Tree

Studio setups can be pretty, sure. But here’s the thing: they’re loud. Like, visually. A perfectly arranged fake living room or seasonal backdrop can end up stealing the spotlight. Suddenly, your family photo is about “that cool prop wall” and not, y’know, you.

Outdoor 'backdrops' do the opposite. They elevate you without competing for attention. Nature knows her role: to support, not distract. Light changes, leaves change, vibes change. Mother Nature keeps it fresh.

Your Kids + Outdoors = The Ultimate Hack

Let’s be real: expecting kids to sit still, smile perfectly, and not touch anything fragile in a studio is basically a Disney-level fantasy. But outside? They can move. They can pick up sticks, chase bugs, climb things (safely!), and be their wild little selves — which, by the way, makes for amazing photos.

It’s not a photoshoot despite the chaos. It’s because of the chaos. That’s where the real memories are.

Real Places = Real Memories

When you do a session in nature — especially somewhere that already means something to your family — those photos hold even more meaning. “Oh yeah, that’s the trail we always walk,” or “That’s the bench where he had his first tantrum over a granola bar.” Way better than “That’s the place with the fake fireplace we rented for an hour.”

It’s not just a photo. It’s a little love letter to your real life.

TL;DR?

If you want stiff poses, perfect lighting ratios, and a backdrop everyone else in town used last Tuesday… I’m probably not your person.

But if you want something a little more alive, a little more real, and a lot more you? Let’s go chase some sunlight.

Your story doesn’t belong in a box. It belongs under the sky.
